Habitat Begins Construction on 1,000th Home in Collier County
Date: March 5, 2007

Habitat for Humanity will raise the walls on its 1,000th home in Collier County tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the community of Trail Ridge, located on U.S. 41 just east of Collier Blvd.

Habitat for Humanity of Collier County has helped more than 5,000 people move into safe and decent homes of their own since 1978. Still, there is an estimated need for more than 30,000 affordable homes locally. Habitat receives 1,400 applications for homes each year.

"This is a tremendous achievement, but there is so much more to be done," said Sam Durso, president of Habitat of Collier County. "We need to build the next 1,000 homes in just seven years."

Collier has built 100 homes a year for five consecutive years, and is only the second Habitat affiliate to reach the milestone of 1,000 homes. Trail Ridge will be home to 204 families when finished.

Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat International in Atlanta, Georgia, will address the crowd of Habitat homeowner families, donors, and volunteers as construction begins on the home Tuesday morning.

"I am very fortunate to help raise the walls on that milestone house," Reckford said. "Beyond the number itself, however, are the thousands of lives HFH of Collier County has impacted by making low income families part of the housing solution."

Noel Garcia was four-years old when his family moved into the first Habitat for Humanity home in Collier County in 1978. Today, Noel is a college graduate who lives in Lakeland, Fl, and his parents still live in the simple, decent home that they helped build 29 years ago.
