From her Habitat for Humanity application :
"My name is Karla and I have two kids, Cassi and Ricky. I moved to Naples almost two years ago with my fiancé at that time. I moved from Fort Lauderdale to start my new life with my family. I knew Naples would be a better place to raise my kids and we moved to a beautiful three bedroom home in the Estates. We lived here for one year and my fiancé decided that things were not working out and that the best thing to do was for me and my kids to move back to my mother's in Fort Lauderdale. I couldn't do that to my kids, they were settled in a new school, made friends and I had a job (Anchor Healthcare) I loved.
Based on my income I couldn't afford anything on my own. I had a few days to move so I looked on the internet and the only things available were studios. I made appointments to see them and the first two said no because I had children and they only rented to single people. I found a lady that had been in the position I was in and she said yes to renting her efficiency with my kids. I live in a room in back of her home with a queen size bed, small kitchen that has a two burner stove, a small sink and a fridge. We all sleep on the same bed.
Things have been really difficult for the three of us. I have a boy and a girl and privacy has become an issue. I explained to my kids that we are in a hard situation and that being together as a family is what counts. I know that this is difficult for them because it's very difficult for me. I want to give my kids everything they deserve and I feel that Habitat for Humanity can help give them a home. I am willing to put in the amount of hours necessary to give my kids a home they can call their own. My co-workers are willing to help me in any way possible. They have seen the things I'm going through and they believe this is a chance for me to get closer to achieving my goals in raising my kids in a positive, healthy environment."
Karla is now working her sweat equity hours. She and her children will be homeowners in the Habitat community of Trail Ridge in East Naples.
