Family Qualification & Selection

We believe in a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Unfortunately, low housing inventory and high prices have made it incredibly difficult for families in our community to access safe and decent housing options. Habitat for Humanity of Collier County offers homeownership opportunities to families with the need, ability to repay, and willingness to partner. We do that by selling homes at-cost with a no-interest mortgage designed to ensure that mortgage payments are affordable.

Our application process is extensive, so we require all prospective partner families to complete a pre-qualification exercise prior to providing applications to ensure that the minimum program requirements are met. Our 2019 Qualification Flyer offers an overview of the most basic income and residency requirements, and below is an overview of our family selection process.

Step 1: Pre-Qualification Questionnaire
Complete and submit an online questionnaire or stop by our office for a pre-qualification interview.

Step 2: Application
Those who are determined to meet the pre-qualification requirements will be eligible to pick up an application from our office. This application is to be taken home, completed, and returned to our office within 30 days. All completed applications are thoroughly evaluated; all documents submitted will be reviewed and verified, including your employment, housing, and family information.

NOTE: Habitat home applicants will be required to submit the following documentation for each individual over the age of 18:

  • Complete tax returns for the previous three years
  • W-2 forms from all jobs for all applicants for the previous three years
  • Proof of additional income or public assistance (current benefits letter), including SSA, SSI, food stamps, workers compensation, pension, etc.
  • Verification of Child Support, including court letter, child support agreement, proof of receipt of funds actually being received, etc.

Step 3: Home Visit
If the information provided in the application meets all of the criteria and guidelines, a Habitat representative will contact the prospective partner family to schedule an appointment to meet in their current homes to assess the housing need of the family, which is an important part of the criteria for our program. During this visit, members of our Selection Committee will visit with the family (all members must be present), address any questions from the application, and take photographs.
**Due to COVID-19 precautions, all home visits are currently being conducted virtually until further notice.**

Step 4: Final Interview
A final interview is scheduled to review the Selection Team’s home visit and address any questions that were raised when the Selection Committee met to consider the application. Final acceptance into the program will be determined once all applicants have completed Step 4.
**Due to COVID-19 precautions, all final interviews are currently being conducted virtually until further notice.**
